Brownfields = Opportunities

In 2000, the City of Fort Dodge initiated  a long-term effort to identify, assess, and cleanup abandoned or underutilized properties throughout the city. This effort is intended to pave the way for sustainable reuse of these properties consistent with the City's long-term redevelopment and comprehensive plans.

Why does the City of Fort Dodge have a Brownfield Program?

Redevelopment of infill properties that are abandoned  or underutilized  can increase nearby residential property values between 5 and 15.2 percent.  Cleanup programs can increase local tax revenues,   reduce risks related to public safety, and  improve community aesthetics. Importantly, redeveloping brownfield sites  limits the expansion of development  in environmentally-sensitive areas.

According to a 2020 study,   redevelopment of brownfield sites:
  • Reduces the amount of impervious surface expansion by 73 to 80 percent;
  • Reduces residential vehicle miles traveled from new growth by  over 15 percent;
  • and, could reduce crime rates in recently revitalized brownfield areas.

The City of Fort Dodge  has taken advantage of federal and state grant funds since the early 2000s for these reasons.
