Brownfields Assessment Grant (2023)
EPA has selected the City of Fort Dodge for a Brownfields Assessment Grant. Community-wide grant funds will be used to conduct 20 Phase I and seven Phase II environmental site assessments. Grant funds also will be used to conduct area-wide planning, cleanup planning, and community outreach activities. The target area for this grant is the City of Fort Dodge's Downtown. Priority sites include a former residential building, an underutilized storage building, and a former motel.

These investments are part of President Biden’s Investing in America Agenda to grow the American economy from the bottom up and middle-out – from rebuilding our nation’s infrastructure, to driving over $470 billion in private-sector manufacturing and clean-energy investments in the United States, to creating a manufacturing and innovation boom powered by good-paying jobs that don’t require a four-year degree, to building a clean-energy economy that will combat climate change and make our communities more resilient.
“EPA is proud to once again partner with Fort Dodge,” said EPA Region 7 Land, Chemical, and Redevelopment Division Director Jeff Robichaud. “This grant will add to the city’s ongoing efforts to provide a cleaner environment and spur economic growth in the region.”
“The redevelopment of brownfield sites is not economically feasible without the assistance of our partners at EPA,” said Fort Dodge Community and Economic Development Director Vickie Reeck. “Fort Dodge is excited to continue the long-standing relationship with our friends at Region 7, as we begin our next Community-Wide Assessment Grant.”

Hazardous Substance and Petroleum Assessment Grant (2013)
The City of Fort Dodge, Iowa was awarded $400,000 in Brownfields Hazardous Substance and Petroleum Assessment grant funds through the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Funds were used to conduct community wide brownfields environmental assessments for hazardous substances and petroleum (Phase I and Phase II). Funds were also used to plan cleanup of sites and conduct community outreach on potentially contaminated properties in the community. $200,000 of the funds were used to address petroleum sites and the other half for sites with known hazardous materials. Over 50 Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) were completed, paving the way for responsible redevelopment.
Brownfields Assessment Demonstration Pilot Grant (2000)
The EPA selected the City of Fort Dodge for a Brownfields Pilot grant in 2000. The major redevelopment focus for this grant was to make the river corridor clean and safe for recreational use through its riverfront master plan. The Pilot targeted three brownfield sites - Volunteer Park Junkyard, Soldier Creek Dump, and the Hawkeye Avenue Elevator. All sites were located along the Des Moines River or Solider Creek greenbelt area. The grant was for $200,000 and tested different redevelopment and cleanup methods.
